The Older Persons' Forum (West Cumbria) has written to all the Health Trusts and Adult Social Care requesting details of their spending on food per person/patient per day.
The results are now to hand as follows:-
Adult Social Services residential care "budget allocation for catering per person per day is £2.90". This is based on the Joseph Rowntree Foundation calculation.
Cumbria Teaching Primary Care Trust:- "the average cost of feeding one patient per day per meal averages across the community hospital sites at £5.81"
North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust " spends on food for patients per day is at Cumberland Infirmary £6.13 at West Cumberland Hospital £6.32".
Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust:-"The budget allocated to the cost of providing in patient meals per day is £10.05"
As you can see there is a considerable range in costs and wide differences in both the language and criteria used. This makes the information at this time extremly difficult to interpret. We are asking all Services to answer the original question asked which was "What is the budget allowed for food per person/patient per day?"
We hope to have a clearer picture within the next month.
Please share this information if it is of interest.
